October Featured Artists: Sep 30 - Oct 26
Michelle Purvis and Kim Tepe
Michelle Purvis uses her work to reflect on the symbiotic relationship we have with our environment. In this new series she is using both acrylic paint and thread, finding symbolism within the thread while mending trees onto canvas. Her intent is to engage her audience in a conversation about reforestation, preservation, and sustainability.
Kim Tepe is a fiber artist who takes inspiration from the forest. In this show she looked at the shape of trees; silhouettes stitched to create vast landscapes or intimate vignettes.

Application Deadline

Alberta Street Gallery has recently lost a cherished Artist Member Lavaun Benavidez-Heaster. Call for Membership
Opportunity for Disabled Artists and BIPOC Artists
Application Deadline
|
Lavaun was a longtime advocate for others with disabilities, and proud of her Indigenous and Ladina heritage. Her wish was that her space in Alberta Street Gallery would be dedicated to broadening the diversity of our artists members. In her two years working at our cooperative gallery, she helped us become more aware of the barriers many people face in their daily lives, and she pushed us to help tear them down. She pointed out that it was nearly impossible for an artist with a disability to break into a mainstream gallery, as she had done, and she wanted to help secure that opportunity for others.
We aim to fulfill her bequest with a Call for Membership exclusively for Disabled artists and artists who are Black, Indigenous or People of Color. Applications will be accepted now through Friday, May 7, 2021. |

Lavaun was a legally blind paper collage artist and a longtime advocate for others with disabilities, who was proud of her Indigenous heritage and Ladina culture. Before she died last November, Lavaun said it was her dearest wish that her space in Alberta Street Gallery be dedicated to broadening the diversity of our artist members.
In her mother’s words, “Lavaun breathed and lived her internal indigenous way along with her spoken heritage of her culture into the forming” of her art. In the two years she was a member of our cooperative gallery, Lavaun helped us become more aware of the barriers many people face in their daily lives, and she pushed us to help tear them down. She pointed out that it was nearly impossible for an artist with a disability to break into a mainstream gallery, as she had done, and she wanted to secure that opportunity for others as well.
In addition to honoring Lavaun with a memorial show, we aim to fulfill her bequest with a Call for Membership exclusively for Disabled Artists and for Artists who are Black, Indigenous or Persons of Color. The call is open now and runs through April 9th. Although Lavaun can never be replaced, we are excited to welcome her successor to our gallery family.
We want to stress that Disabled Artists and BIPOC Artists are ALWAYS welcome to apply to our Open Calls for Membership and our Open Calls for Art Shows at Alberta Street Gallery. We have created these specific additional opportunities to amplify the voice and vision of underrepresented artists.
We have created another opportunity for Disabled Artists to exhibit their work at Alberta Street Gallery. The call for the Able Arts Show is open now, and online registration runs through May 23rd. There is no fee to submit or exhibit work.
The Able Arts Show will be held June 7-27 in Lavaun’s Community Gallery, which in pre-Covid times was the space inside Alberta Street Gallery where Lavaun often hosted small events for local artists. “Soaring: Lavaun Benavidez-Heaster Memorial Show” will be held there April 1-25.
You can find more information about the Gallery Membership position and the Able Arts Show below.
Please spread the word to artists who might be interested.
