David Friedman works in a variety of media and calls himself an eclecticist. His work at the Alberta Street Gallery is both papercuttings, mixed media with an element of papercutting, and archival art prints. After a 30 year career as an artist and graphic designer, David went into Powell’s books on Hawthorne Street in Portland, Oregon and saw a book on papercutting, then went home and cut his first design. More than a decade later, David has become an innovative papercutter himself. His signature works are all hand cut using #11 blades and pastel papers. David creates a duplex of colored papers with black or white papers and then cuts both colors together. Then he cuts “stilts” out of wood, paper or acrylic rods to use in mounting the pieces on a light background. The colors from the high contrast, colored papers reflect on the background after mounting, creating a unique colored glow around his paper cuttings. Each piece is one of a kind.* David also creates a body of work using his drawing skills and an iPad. These works often relate to favorite themes from his papercuttings: natural subjects like trees, plants and birds; faces, human interaction; and his love of animals of all kinds.
*David creates templates of his designs and may cut multiples from a single design.
